Universals

The Universal Camera Company of NY, now defunct, made many different cameras. Many were under the name Univex. I love the heavy metal one above with the art deco ridged lens tube. Many of their cameras were also plastic, like the tiny 828 film camera to the bottom left, and the twin lens 828 film camera below. American camera companies like Universal and Argus had a tough time staying in business as the Japanese and European cameras competed more & more for market share.

The Mercury II was a camera that was a long way ahead of its time.  I think of it as the Edsel of cameras.  Built in 1945, it was a half frame 35mm camera, the first with 1/1000 of a second shutter speed. See the hump on its back, this housed its rotary shutter. One would adjust shutter speeds by changing the size of the slice in the round metal shutter. Ingenious.

FYI, 828 was similar to 35mm but came on a spool like 120 rather than in a cassette like 35mm. 35 mm came out in 1934 & still is sold today, 828 came out in 1935 & was discontinued in 1985. 35 mm is 24x36mm, 828 was 28x40mm in size.
